Mooleh Manay

In the Andes mountains of northern Peru, at the edge of the Amazon, the producers of Cajamarca have banded together to improve quality, increase productivity, and advocate for fair trade. Although it's the second largest coffee growing region in Peru, it is also the poorest.

The cooperative now enables the smallholder farmers to produce extraordinary coffee in this perfectly suited environment, while also offering fair compensation. The El Guayacan shows a depth of complexity in it's chocolate-like sweetness and light floral qualities. A shining success and bright future for Peruvian producers.

La Serranía Decaf is grown along an isolated set of mountains within the Andes. This coffee represents the work of more than 50 producers who are committed to quality and excellence. La Serranía is carefully hand-sorted and processed at each individual farm, with special attention paid to the drying process to ensure consistency, uniformity, and a clean cup profile.

La Serranía Decaf is a Natural EA Decaf Coffee, processed at the Descafecol plant in Manizales. The decaffeination process at this plant uses ethyl acetate derived 100% from sugar cane mixed with mountain water, together removing 99.7% of the caffeine present. The beauty of the Natural EA process is that it helps preserve most of the original flavors of the coffee while adding fruity notes and some complexity to the cup.

Venkids Valley Estate

The Gran Galope program was born from the desire to support small-scale producers subject to low market prices in the  Inzá region on Cauca.

Colombia boasts some of the most varied microclimates in the world, and this coffee from the Huila region highlights just that. Sourced from between 10 and 30 various smallholder farms, the cup contains a nice balance of sweetness with a fruity punch, on top of a foundation of cocoa and toffee.

With Castillo, Caturra and Colombia varietals, this is a washed process coffee, which produces a winey profile, especially on pour over.

Gran Galope

We're proud to continue to work with our wonderful importers, including the Women Coffee Producers Program, aiming to address inequality in coffee growing regions by creating equity, visibility and access to a wider market for women. 

The women’s association are able to put the premium, earned for their Women Coffee Producers lots, towards organic fertiliser distribution to the women farmers, among other benefits such as health-care programs and workshops specifically targeting the area’s high infant-mortality rate.

Women Producers

This washing station and farm belonging to Hendra and his family is an island of specialty experimental processed coffee in a sea of conventional wet hulled coffee the area is typically known for. Hendra’s father, Hamdan moved to the area in 2006 from Banda Aceh and then bought some land in the sub district of Pegasing to start growing coffee. 

The coffee is purchased from 70 farmers around the area who want to work with Hendra and pick ripe cherry as he has incentivised them to do this by rewarding good picking. Working with local farmers to plant small plots on their land where he pays more for this varietal due to the reduced yield and higher cup quality.

Pegasing

This is a special preparation washed process coffee, where the cherries are de-pulped, fermented overnight and washed before being submerged for 8-16 hours. The beans are washed again before drying on raised bed for 9-12 days. 

With an altitude of 1800masl, this sweet and soft cup produces notes of lemon juice and floral flavours of both jasmine and bergamot.

Arosala Special Prep

Gaikundo is a microlot, and part of eight farms in the Rumukia Farmers Cooperative Society. The farmers own on average around 1/6 of a hectare and sell other crops alongside their coffee 
From the Mukurweini, Nyeri region in Kenya, this is a washed process grown at altitude of between 1220 – 2300 masl. This is a delicious new smallerholder lot, which is super sweet – with notes of Brown Sugar, Apple & Citrus.

The Coffee Gardens Project was established with many purposes, such as improve farmers income and livelihoods, create and provide rural employment, promote gender equality, increase transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain and enviromental protection in the area. 

The Coffee Gardens is transparent with theirs partner farmers about buying policy and prices, providing each registered farmer with a contract and a buying-record book, communicating any price changes to registered farmers. The coffee in this micro-lot is produced by the farmers on the mountain above The Coffee Gardens’ washing station.

Miwu

Elí Espinoza is the owner of 4 hectares of coffee in the village of las Pirias in Chirinos. Elí has a few parcels of land spread across the village, some planted mostly with typica, caturra and bourbon. Elí processes all his coffee at his house, which sits at 1800masl and his farms are all between 1800 and 2000masl. 

He started out picking coffee in the village, and after a while he was able to buy his own land, a house and started working to produce his own coffee. This year Eli has mastered how to process his coffees as natural as well as washed after investing in 2019 in a large solar dryer in with increased capacity which gave him greater control over the drying process.

The town of Buesaco lies on a ridge high in the Andes mountains of the Nariño department. The Cooperativa Cafes Especiales collects coffees from smallholder farms which are tucked in the slopes surrounding the town.

The Buesaco Cherry lot is juicy, clean, and floral, named for its fruit-forward cup profile, created by allowing the coffee to rest longer in cherry either on the tree or after being harvested. Coop Cafes Especiales de Nariño has a regional reputation for quality and for compensating producers according to it. The coop employs and trains many of Buesaco’s young adults in its facilities, providing a meaningful source of local employment and on-the-job education.

Garzón has always been an area that produces coffee and cacao. The majority of the farms in the region lie between 1200-1600masl, and in recent years the area has had huge problems with leaf rust, due to warm temperatures found on the majority of the farms.

‘La Falda’ derives from Garzón, the name coming from the shape of the mountains against the horizon, which looks like a skirt. This coffee has notes of coriander seeds, yellow fruit, panela, and caramel. It has a silky body, bright orange acidity with hints of almonds.

Antônio Firmo de Mattos came to coffee farming as part of the family business. His grandfather began farming in 1895 at Fazenda do Racho in the municipality of Contagem, Minas Gerais. This farm was the beginning of the family cultivating coffee – a legacy that would carry through generations to continue on today.

Antônio chose to farm in Sul de Minas at the recommendation of several other farmers who were dedicated to quality just like he was. Today, he operates Fazenda Boa Vista in the city of Oliveira, Minas Gerais. The farm is 30 hectares in total, with 28 hectares dedicated to growing Catuai, Yellow Bourbon, and Mundo Novo coffee trees.

Alasitas lies in a lush, steep mountain valley in the La Paz department. The farm is located at the door of the Amazon Jungle and the views that the farm offers is layers of mountains that vanish into infinity merging with the blue colours of the sky.

Freshly picked cherries are loaded into sealed tanks with water and an airlock. This produces anaerobic fermentation in the cherries. *For the ‘lactic’ process, they fermente for 3-5 days, but keeping the temperature very low to prevent off flavours. Their goal is to create a very low pH environment, before going through a more standard washed process afterwards. They’ve also added a rinsing stage before the cherries go into tank to clean them of anything on the surface.

Finca Alasitas

In Costa Rica’s Central Valley, Hacienda Sonora sits at the foot of the celebrated Poás Volcano. Alberto Guardia began growing coffee at Hacienda Sonora 45 years ago. His son Diego was born and raised on Sonora and then left to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree at San Diego State University. After graduating he decided to return home to work with his father and improve and maintain the farm’s operation.

This Villa Sarchi Yellow Honey was grown at Sonora Colorado and milled at Palmichal, in the yellow honey processing style. Diego & Alberto are very excited about their coffee business and are looking forward to growing in volume and varietals.

Costa Rica Hacienda Sonora

La Estrella del Ostro is a Colombian specialty coffee grown by various small-scale coffee growers from Belen. Belen is a small town located in the southern region of La Plata, Huila. These small-scale producers share the same microclimates.

‘La Estrella del Ostro’ gets its name from the Star of the Southern Wind, which shines just above the mountain range where this coffee is grown. On a clear night, this bright star points towards the top of the mountain in La Plata. This coffee is juicy with a mix of caramel and fruity flavours. lt has sweet notes of lemongrass with a kiwi-like acidity, with a gingery finish.

Colombia - La Estrella Del Ostro (Decaf)

As both an experienced farmer and coffee cupper, what Edier brings to the table is quite rate. While he cultivates the common Caturras and Colombias, his speciality is his array of Bourbons - and none more prominent that the pink mutation.

His post-harvest process is second to none, with an immaculate and intentionally well-appointed wet mill and drying facility. Edier is also one of the few farmers that we know of that employs the use of Tephrosia, a short, rapidly growing, nitrogen-fixing tree.

Located in Iriani, in the Nyeri County, the area lies at an altitude of 1,600masl on the fertile foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare ranges slope, and is well known for the quality produced and commonly referred to as the home of Kenyan coffee.

Farmers deliver their coffee to the factory on the same day as harvesting for sorting and grading. Primary processing involves mechanical pulping of the cherry skins and then the remaining mucilage is removed through a fermentation process. The coffee beans are then dried on raised beds and turned continuously to protect it from hot temperatures and ensure even drying.

La Estrella comes from 126 producers from the department of Nueva Segovia, 225km from Nicaragua’s capital Managua. This is a region very close to the border with Honduras and is part of the Cordillera de Dipilito Nature Reserve, a place with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The name La Estrella comes from the Beneficio La Estrella, the coffee mill founded in 2013, located in the municipality of Ocotal.

La Estrella has been crafted by outstanding new coffee producers and long-term partners from different municipalities around Nueva Segovia such as Macuelizo, Dipilto, San Fernando, Mozonte and Jalapa.

Nicaragua La Estrella

The Mooleh Manay estate prioritises high quality and is known for experimenting with different processes to get the best out of their coffees. They are well known for their selectively picked, natural processed coffee. 

It is common in India for the harvest to be 'strip picked'. This means that all of the ripe and unripe cherries are taken together for processing, resulting in a lower quality cup. At Mooleh Manay they take 3 times longer to harvest as they only pick the fully ripe cherries. This allows for a more consistent product and a much higher quality cup. Their selectively picked natural is an amazing coffee, with wonderful grape and cherry notes, set apart from the coffees you’d usually encounter from the region.
