Small Batch Coffee Roasters

Region: Calarca,Quindio
Variety: Pink Bourbon
Producer: Raw Material, El Fénix Community Wet Mill

A stellar micro lot from El Fenix, this coffe is a rare Pink Bourbon varietal, tea-like and delicate with a peach and orange acidity.

El Fénix is located in the eastern municipality of Quindío, Colombia in Calarcá. It faces west toward the Cauca Valley and the central mountain range. The farm has ideal climate conditions with a strong sun reflection off the valley and an average rainfall 2.275 mm a year, in addition to natural spring falls which provide water for the farm’s needs.

As well as being a rare variety producing farm, El Fénix is also home to a developing a community wet mill for producers in the area. The project was crowdfunded to help fund the construction of the mill, which when complete will provide the region’s farmers with greater control over their coffee quality, and control over their income through a fixed price payment system. Investment in this kind of accessible infrastructure is one of the necessary steps to make good on the promise of development through trade.

Colombia - El Fenix

This beautiful washed coffee is grown by the Peralta family in the Nueva Segovia region.

The Peralta family is based in Ocotal in the region of Nueva Segovia, and run by Julio and Octavio Peralta. The cousins and both their fathers manage several farms located in the region of Nueva Segovia, where the Dipilto-Jalapa mountain range separates Nicaragua and Honduras. During the civil war this was the stage of the fighting guerillas, but now the Nueva Segovia is the breeding ground for most of the Cup of Excellence winners in the last decade. The farms harvest throughout December to April, especially in the higher altitudes parts of the mountains where the harvest hits much later. 

Nicaragua is interesting in terms of specialty production, as they use traditional methods for applying modern processing methods such as yellow & red honeys. All of the wet processing is done at the farms up in the mountains, but for drying, the coffee bags are taken to a centralized Dry Mill. The climate changes drastically about an hour down the mountain, creating the right conditions for finalizing the post-harvest process. The farms are managed centrally from the Mill where the agronomist - Edwin - goes out to visit them each day of the week.

Nicaragua - Santa Maria de Lourdes

We’ve got two fantastic coffees from the Kateshi Estate - Bemba Project in Northern Zambia. Kateshi has been recognised for boldly challenging the gender stereotypes in Zambia, being the first and only coffee estate to employ women for traditionally male-dominated roles such as driving tractors and even larger equipment like road graders and bulldozers. A strong focus on gender equality makes this coffee directly contribute to the empowerment of women – and this not restricted to the farm; the new found sense of independence and pride also spills over into the neighbouring communities.

This coffee showcases the versatility and uniqueness in the cup that we often see from Colombia. This coffee was sourced in partnership with Azahar Coffee Company, who works with Colombia’s best coffees and coffee farmers.

In the cup, expect lemon, caramel and pink grapefruit flavours giving way to a well rounded mouthfeel.

ROASTERS NOTES:
The name “Chachagüi” originates from two indigenous languages, Quillacinga and Quechua. The word roughly translates respectively to “land of clear waters” and “good water”.

This coffee is comprised of the Castillo and Colombia varieties, and was produced by various growers from the municipality of Chachagüí, where the cherries were grown between 1,950 and 2,000 masl.

The temperature at which coffee grows in this region ranges between 18°c and 20°c. Chachagüí’s coffee trees are nurtured by the waters of the Pasto and Juanambú rivers.

The producers carry out the beneficio process, de-pulping the ripest cherries, and then placing them in fermentation tanks for 18 to 24 hours. The drying process takes place on patios and parabolic greenhouse-style dryers. The drying time for each producer varies, but for this blend was around ten days.

Colombia - Chachagüí

Expect brightness in the cup with juicy red grape and mango flavours, currant on the nose and a candy like mouthfeel.

ROASTERS NOTES:
This coffee is fully washed, which allows the delicate qualities of the acidity and sweetness to shine through. The coffee cherries are hand picked and then sorted to remove the underripe and overripe cherries. Ripe coffee cherries are de-pulped and then fermented for 3-4 days. The coffee is then washed and dried on raised African beds for 14-16 days depending on ambient conditions. The parchment coffee is constantly turned during the drying process to ensure consistency and covered at night and during the hottest part of the day to protect the coffee from damage.

Tanzania - Lunji AA

This is the first coffee we have had from DR Congo since 2013 and we’re delighted to see the ways in which Virunga Coffee Company is driving sustainability and economic change within these coffee growing communities.

This coffee beautifully showcases the sweetness and complexities we often see from honey processed coffees. In the cup look for orange and red grape flavours giving way to a silky milk chocolate body.

ROASTERS NOTES:
Virunga Coffee Company was established in 2011 by Schluter SA (now Olam Specialty Coffee Europe) with the vision to: “Change lives in DRC through commerce in a mutually profitable way by being a major coffee actor in Kivu.” The company aims to achieve this vision by improving the quality and yields for farmers in North and South Kivu. The mission is to:

- Increase overall coffee production through the training of smallholder farmers and provision of thousands of coffee plantlets.

- Improve quality and farmer incomes through farmer training on all aspects from tree to green bean.

- Assure that the highest standards of traceability and ecology are reached through large scale organic certification.

Hutwe station is located at 1,790 masl in Kirumba zone, a very challenging region plagued with rebel groups. Through Virunga Coffee Company’s committment to investing in the DRC coffee industry and its farmers, they have established 7 washing stations in North and South Kivu. This has allowed improvements in quality and in turn, higher premiums to be paid to farmers.

As well as producing high quality fully washed coffee with raised bed drying, they have diversifed into specialty natural and honey processing. The honey process combines elements of both natural and washed methods in which the coffee cherries are allowed to dry without washing after they have been de-pulped. Most of the cherry has been removed but some sticky muscilage remains, giving the end result of complex flavours in the cup.

A high-quality coffee, this fully washed lot is sourced from 50 smallholder producers in Mt. Hagen in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands, where approximately two-thirds of PNG's population make a living in the coffee industry.

A unique microlot filled with flavour, only a small amount of this coffee was produced, meaning much more care and effort went into growing it to produce a truly rare one-of-a-kind coffee.
