We’ve been buying direct to Kemptown from the Barbosa family in Brazil for some time and visited late last year, much drinking ensued!  Danilo set up the business which is now run between him and his sons and they have their beautiful ‘waterfall’ farm with three principal growing areas in the Minas Gerais area (General Mines).  A small loyal workforce bring in the harvest each year and they have an incredible crop, really indicative of the area and we have tasted and shipped the finest lots.  We highly recommend this coffee, if you are looking for a great price specialty Brazilian then this is the one.

Celestine – featured holding the RR tube – owns three acres of land in Rwanda’s Northern Province close to the Kinini washing station. We first met in 2016 when on a buying trip and at that time Celestine had never tasted his own coffee, the crop being too valuable for him to drink. We have been back to see Celestine several times since then, bringing with us his coffee roasted for him to try (having never tried coffee before he added at least seven sugars!) and his four children are growing up in his footsteps growing coffee in the Rusiga district.

Back around 2008 – 2010 this was our best selling coffee and we featured it until around 2016.  So for 2020 we are delighted to bring back this unique and bold coffee.  We are roasting this to bring out a really bold and earthy flavour. For those who love a classic Italian espresso, this is our third wave version of that.  Never bitter, perfect with milk and if you like an espresso with a kick this is the one.

Legend has it that Monsoon coffee was developed by accident. The story goes that in the days of sailing arabica coffee to ScandinaviA, so much torrential rain was encountered en route that by time the coffee had recached its final destination the coffee characteristics had changed completely on arrival.

These days the process of monsooning coffee has been streamlined and presently undergoes a sequence of sophisticated operations, and during this process the coffee actually bloats to almost twice its size, changes its texture and colour to pale gold and acquires a really unique flavour and quality. Wind force, moisture content and humidity controls are monitored and controlled and the coffee is then polished to add on a luster to the beans and graded to various Monsoon classifications.

This decaf has surprised many when tasted blind as it often people’s favorite when tasted side by side with caffeinated coffees. This coffee is produced by the Sol Y Cafe Co-operative which is made up of 1020 members that come from Cajamarca, San Ignacio, and Jaén regions. The cooperative consists of small producers, whose purpose is to contribute to the integral development of the member’s family and community, prioritizing the execution of agricultural activities, acting with social responsibility, preserving the environment, and with a vision of sustainable development.

Once the coffee has been harvested it is taken to the headquarters in Jaén to be graded making sure all the criteria of quality are met before then sending it to be decaffeinated using the Swiss water method.

The Swiss Water Process is an organic, 100% chemical-free option for decaffeination. It was discovered in the 1930s in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and is commercialized by the Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Company Inc, founded in 1988.

We are continually travelling the world to find and work with green coffee producers that share our passion for quality and when we find them we are always excited to share them with you. When roasting Botanical Punk our focus is on highlighting sweetness, acidity and all the complex flavours that can be discovered in these unique coffees.  This is one of the coffees we offer at our home coffee shop in Kemptown Brighton.. worth a visit if you’re local!

The Boschessi washing station is located in the West of the Guji Zone. It was formed in 2002 when the districts of the Borena Zone were split apart to create it. Guji is named after the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, the Oromo people and represents 34.5% of Ethiopia’s population. The Guji zone offers unique flavour and is very distinct from Sidamo (the previously considered sub-region).
The coffee is picked at optimum ripeness and dried on raised beds for 15 – 17 days. This means airflow both above and below the coffee making the drying process easier and more efficient than patio drying.
The Heirloom coffee variety is a term used to include many varieties of coffee in Ethiopia. The small farms where this coffee is grown are farming on red clay soil which is rich in minerals such as aluminium and iron and then taken to the washing station to get processed.
We roast these beans light-medium and you will pick up blackberry, chocolate and jasmine notes. A delicious Ethiopian brew and well worth a try.

ASORCAFÉ (the Asociacion de Cafeteros del Sur oriente Caucano)

The Asociación de Productores de Café del Oriente Caucano (ASORCAFÉ) is based in the municipality of Inzá, Cauca. Founded in 2010 by 10 producers, the group now has 450 smallholder members spread across the valleys of the Macizo Colombiano. Inzá is located on the border of Cauca, Huila and Tolima states, and benefits from a stable climate thanks to it’s proximity to the surrounding mountains, humid weather patterns from the west and dry winds form the south. Coffee is harvested year round, with the main crop being in November-March.  We are roasting this a little darker to bring out richer chocolately, caramel and vanilla notes.

Organic Colombia – Cauca

We work with Don Alfonso and his family from the Aquiares Estate in Costa Rica.  In the 1990’s Don Alfonso launched a program to enable workers to buy homes and land from the farm. To begin with most people thought it was too good to be true, but his long term vision meant that people could invest more in education and wellbeing. These days the community of Aquiares has grown in the midst of the farm and is home to almost 2000 people.  96% of Aquiares employees own their own home thanks to him.

The Planadas Community Region
This exceptional coffee originates from 48 Planadas producing hamlets covering an area of some 14200 coffee-producing hectares. Producing around 9 million tons of cherries annually: 6821 family-run farms from 0.3 to 6 hectares in size. In the past, this area was classed as a red zone but now the new peace accord in progress breathing new life into a long-forgotten area, ensuring a very promising future for many families who are passionate about farming their lands.

Kigutha Estate coffee is a high grown top quality coffee from the slopes of the famous Aberdare mountain range, close to Kiambu town, north of Nairobi. The annual production of the farm produces roughly 60% AA and 35% AB each year, with a small amount of under grade sold separately.

Blue grass is grown in between the lines of coffee to reduce water loss and soil erosion, with rainwater collected from the processing unit and sent to the nearby run off collection dam, home to government protected hippopotamus. A number of differing trees are grown in the nursery to form shade cover which helped the farm gain RFA status back in 2009. Shade grown coffee is uncommon in Kenya and the bird life benefits greatly from a differing height of tree cover.

In the true Kenyan style, cherry is picked, washed and fermented before undergoing a soaking -an additional 24 hours under clean water that allows amino acids to build, and is attributed to giving the clarity of flavour and syrupy body we have come to know and love. The beans are then sun dried on raised beds until ready for dry milling and exporting.
