This coffee could not be more fresh. The container from El Salvador arrived at the end of July and this is the first coffee off the line.

Maracaturra is a hybrid variety – a blend of Maragogype and Caturra. The cupping profile of the Maracaturra has benefited from the combination of genes it inherited. The bright acidity, citrus and floral notes of the Maragogype combine with the sweetness and elegance of the Caturra. This combination produces a clean tasting, complex coffee with layers of fruit and floral notes.

Finca Las Mercedes, owned and managed by Lucia Ortiz and her family in El Salvador, is located at Cerro El Tigre, 3 km to the east of Santiago de Maria, Usulutan.

We have been direct relationship partners for a number of years now and have worked together to bring you nothing but the best from this award-winning farm.

Grown at 1,460 m.a.s.l on the El Rubi plot of the farm, this coffee has a heavy body and mouthfeel with notes of plum, pistachio and honey with an elegant acidity.

The Guariroba is a Direct Trade coffee that we selected after our first ever trip to Brazil in 2016. We loved it and have been buying from grower Homero Paiva ever since.

Homero draws upon a long heritage of coffee production. He represents the 5th generation, and a new one is already following in the family’s footsteps.

Homero’s uncle, Fernando Paiva, started to produce good quality coffees in the 1940s. He saw the potential of the Santo Antônio do Amparo region for specialty natural coffees.

After many years, Homero Paiva started his own coffee production on the same farm that he grew up on. Today they focus on specialty coffees with a sustainable approach to farming.

A lovely easy drinking coffee with a creamy mouthfeel, the Guariroba is well balanced with medium acidity. We get notes of dark chocolate, brazil nut and red apple.

This coffee comes from the Nyamsheke District in Southern Rwanda. It is processed using the washed method and consists solely of the Red Bourbon variety, making it a classic example of a coffee from this region.

We’ve been buying and roasting Rwandan coffees for years and the constant increase in quality has been incredible.  Each year’s crop offers ever more layers of complexity, making it a prime East African origin for us.

This lot is named after the Gitwe washing station where it is processed.

A total of 800 smallholder farmers are delivering their coffee to this newly constructed quality-focused station where the coffee cherries are pulped right away, fermented for 8-12 hours, and then sundried on raised beds for 10-15 days.

The very high altitude, combined with the nutrient dense volcanic soils of the region, offer absolutely perfect conditions for growing coffee and the final cup proves it.

Expect complex layers of red apple, raspberry and hibiscus with a fantastic tea-like body.

Gitwe

Gatare is one the oldest washing stations in the country and has the reputation of being among the first stations to process very high quality coffee for export. Gatare is located in the Nyamsheke District in Western Province, Southern Rwanda. The station is surrounded by hills covered by coffee trees. Gatare has competed in the Cup Of Excellence competition many times, and always ended in the high winning lots.

It is processed using the Natural method, where the cherries are dried whole and consists solely of the Red Bourbon variety, making it a classic example of a coffee from this region.

We have chosen this coffee because it tastes more like a gentle Washed process than the Natural. Its fruitiness is bright, with red berries, apple and floral flavours.

Rwanda Gatare Natural Red Bourbon

This decaf comes from the Caldas department of Colombia. It is grown by a group of smallholder farmers living within the San Lorenzo indigenous community, just north of the town of Riosucio.  Riosucio is known for the popular carnival commonly called the “Carnival of the Devil”.

This region until recently was heavily inhabited by the various paramilitary groups and guerrillas who looked to control this central corridor in Colombia.

As such, this region in not yet widely known for specialty coffee production.  However, as the tensions ease and access has improved, it is now possible to source high scoring and traceable coffees from there.

Like most of the coffee grown in Colombia , the farms contributing to this community lot are very small compared to the rest of the world’s big producers.  Each farmer has approximately 0.5 Ha of land in which they have about 2500 coffee trees.
During the harvest, the families who run the farms will work with their neighbours to select ripe cherry before de-pulping in micro-mills on site where they will then ferment, wash and then dry the coffee on small drying patios on the roofs of the houses. They then deliver it to the Cooperativa de Caficultores de Alto Occidente de Caldas based in Riosucio who will handle the milling and organise the decaffeination of the coffee.

The sugar cane decaffeination used for this coffee takes place at origin using fermented sugar cane molasses as the base product of the process. This is well suited for Colombia where sugar cane is widely grown.

At Alchemy we put as much effort into finding the right decaf as we do with the rest of our range. As coffee that has gone through this process tends to age quicker, we make an effort to buy only lots that have very recently landed in UK.

To us, tasting the true flavours found in the coffee, not clouded by the processing, is the key – so we’ve designed our roasting style of these coffees with that in mind.

This coffee works equally well as filter and espresso, with milk or without.

Expect a sweet full bodied cup with a subtle underlying fruitiness that is expected from a great Colombian coffee.

San Lorenzo Decaf Espresso Roast

Mustefa Abakeno is a smallholder with 18 hectares of land near Agaro in the Jimma Zone of Western Ethiopia. His farm is located at 2,040masl and is planted with coffee varieties from the Jimma research centre.

This coffee comes from Beshasha washing stations, one of the two Mustefa owns. It has a small disc pulper that is used to wash-process the coffee. Due to a lack of water in the area and limited space to ferment the coffee, Mustefa ferments the pulped coffee for a short period (8 hours) before he moves it to his drying beds (for 13-16 days), and the result is something like a light honey.

Due to subtle differences in location and microclimate, Beshasha now almost exclusively processes washed lots, while naturals are processed on the other washing station, which has more space for drying beds. 

This coffee is defined by its acidity and aromatics. You will experience apple juice, peach, lemonade and jasmine. There might be some subtle spiciness, think cinnamon.

It is that time of year again – the coffees from our Direct Trade partners in El Salvador have just arrived and we can start to release them. 

We are proud to present this exceptional coffee by award winning producer and long term partner and friend, Lucia Ortiz. Located between 1,456 – 1,600 masl, La Avila is one of the three smaller farms that make up the wider Las Mercedes farm.

We are honoured to have been trading directly with Lucia since 2015. As well as producing beautiful coffees, Lucia and her family also sponsor a doctors station – The Ortiz Dispensario – on the farm, which provides healthcare to people from 11 neighbouring communities. 

This coffee is a washed process Red Bourbon variety. Clean and elegant – the kind of coffee you can drink all day. It’s no surprise that this is a favourite amongst our customers – when it runs out we get emails and texts asking when it is going to be back in the lineup – well, here it is.
