We’ve had the great privilege of sampling and sourcing a few coffees from the El Vergel estate now, and this coffee might be our all-time favorite! Producers Elias and Shady Bayter have increased their production of experimental processing methods over the years, and this double anaerobic naturally processed coffee has one of the most exciting flavor profiles we’ve tried in 2021.

To push the fruit-forward characteristics of this lot while still maintaining balance and clarity, the ripe Caturra cherries first undergo a 12-hour anaerobic fermentation in sealed bags. The cherries are then transferred to tanks where they undergo an additional 60 hours of anaerobic fermentation underwater. Finally, the cherries are sun-dried for an average of 15 days. The results are wildly fruity, exotic, and vibrant lots that we can’t stop drinking!

Producer Raul Rodriguez is known by many as “the son of Don Ermenegildo Rodriguez.”  Don Ermenegildo was one of the biggest coffee innovators of his time and helped introduce the world to exotic varietals such as Yellow Bourbon, Typica, and Caturra.  While Raul carries on his father’s farm, his name, and his love for innovation, there is much more to to be said about the unique producer Raul is becoming. 

His new farm, Santa Lucia Reserve, is certified organic.  Here he employs around 75 pickers during coffee harvest season along with the 15 permanent workers that live on the farm with their families. As a socially conscious coffee producer, Raul pays his workers the highest salaries in the region and he even donated part of his profits from all of his direct sales last year to help rebuild the local school.

Santa Lucia, perfectly planted in Montaña de La Choca atop a national mountain reserve, is surrounded by a cloud forest full of exotic wildlife. The well-defined seasons in this region contribute to the high quality of specialty coffees. The rainy season results in beautiful cherries, and the clear, dry season allows the producers to sun-dry their coffee once it is washed. The high altitude, richness of the clay, soil, and warmth of the sun ensure that the integrity and quality of the beans are preserved from beginning to end. 

We were first introduced to Santa Lucia and Raul through Nelson Amador, founder of De La Finca Coffee Importers. Raul is Nelson’s grandfather, and his experience with the farm and the quality of coffee made the decision to work together an easy one. We’re proud to offer such an exceptional direct trade coffee, and think you’ll enjoy this coffee in all brew methods, especially drip and espresso.

Another year, another amazing harvest from the Mzuzu Cooperative! Comprised of six smaller coffee-growing cooperatives (Misuku, Phoka, Viphya North, Nkata Bay Highlands, South East Mzimba & Ntchsisi), the Mzuzu Cooperative continues to produce exceptional coffee year after year. This is the third straight harvest we’ve purchased from the Mzuzu Cooperative, and we couldn’t be happier to have this coffee back on the shelf.

The Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union is located in northern Malawi, near the southern border of Tanzania. The northern hills of Malawi receive plenty of rainfall, and the influence of Lake Malawi (the 9th largest lake in the world) helps to maintain a moderate climate with excellent soil conditions.

Our fifth lot from Mzuzu showcases a familiar profile from previous years: a rich syrupy body balanced with subtle citrus notes and dense baking spices. In this full-bodied lot, we taste molasses, gingerbread, and pomegranate.

Established in October 2013 in Querocoto, Cajamarca, Cooperativa Agraria Rutas del Inca was organized by 33 founding members as a quality focused, organic certified coffee collective. The cooperative exported its first lot in 2014, and has continued producing exceptional lots year over year.

Rutas del Inca produces high-quality coffee created by favorable environmental conditions such as temperature, day length, a consistent humidity of 70 to 80%, high altitude, and rainfall. These conditions, combined with a wide variety of cultivars and good management practices—including proper composting, selective harvesting, well-timed fermentation, and solar drying—converge to make up an excellent coffee. The coffee is 100% washed, with 80% of the cooperative members processing the coffee individually at their farms. The coffee is depulped the same day it is harvested, then fermented for 12 to 20 hours depending on the altitude of the farm. Eighty percent of the coffee is dried in solar tents with raised beds, with the remainder dried on covered patios.

This coffee was  awarded a Bronze medal in both the Espresso and Milk-Based Espresso categories at the 2018 Golden Bean coffee competition in Portland, OR!

From the Latin word “conducere” meaning “bring together,” Conduit brings together seasonal coffees to produce a bright, clean, and balanced flavor profile. An exceptionally versatile blend, this coffee is rich and sweet when brewed as a filter coffee and is great isolated as a shot or with milk in a latte or cappuccino. Enjoy the taste of the season!

After a hard-fought five-year run, Uel Zing Coffee ceased coffee brewing operations in late 2017.  As roasting partners with Uel Zing, it’s sad to see a friend leave the industry, but hey…. when life throws you a curveball, you sit back and hit that curveball over the fence.

To keep the legacy of Uel Zing alive, we continue to roast and distribute the blend we all loved so much. The focus of the blend is to highlight two of the prominent flavors we love most in a cold brew and espresso: rich chocolate and dark fruit. Whether you brew the Zing Blend as an espresso or cold brew, you can count on a rich and sweet complexity with a focus on balance. This one won’t ever let you down.

Balanced and sweet, this coffee is naturally decaffeinated using organic compounds found in sugarcane.  

This lot comes to us from a group of producers called Frutos Del Bosque, with farms located in the highlands between Huila and Tolima. This lush, mountainous landscape is a coffee growers dream, with high elevation and biodiversity creating fertile soil that allows coffee to flourish. 

We take our time sourcing exceptional decaffeinated coffees, and will only carry one decaffeinated coffee at a time. Our goal is to identify exceptional lots that satisfy the most discerning palate, and this lot from Tolima stood out among dozens of coffees on the cupping table.
