Mahembe is a truly exceptional coffee and it is a unique cornerstone in our Rwandan collection. We visit the farm each summer, and after seven years, we have forged a strong relationship with Justin Musabiyama who runs the washing station. Mahembe has flavour notes of sweet morello cherries, cocoa nibs and cola with supplementing spices tones of nutmeg. The cup has a clean, lasting finish. 

Rwanda has a long history of coffee production but has only recently seen improvements in processing quality – with the Western Province producing some of the best. Justin returned home after the genocide in 1994 and set to work reviving his family’s coffee farm to help bring stability and economic opportunities to the region. Payment to his farmers includes health insurance, school fees and livestock. Thanks to his strong focus on quality and community building, 75% of what Justin produces is now A1 grade, and he takes a top five position every year during the Cup of Excellence (COE).

Rwanda is the land of 1000 hills and blessed with ideal growing conditions for coffee: High altitude, regular rainfall and rich soil. We have been roasting coffee from David Rubanzangabo’s washing station since 2013. His washed Bourbon is a favourite of ours and it has all that you want from a unique Rwandan coffee. Flavours of milk chocolate, blood orange and raisin are supported by dates sweetness and slight nutmeg spices. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich with that extra finish you can only find in a great lot from this particular region.

David is a key figure in the development of Specialty Coffee in Rwanda, having won Cup of Excellence many times by now. When he took the Huye Mountain private, he segmented the mountain range into seven zones - each with a different flavour profile. David is a true philanthropist who cares deeply about the families he works with. He offers incentives to farmers to produce high quality coffee, working with social premiums and quality incentives. We are proud to work closely with David, and this years lots are better than ever.

Huye Mountain

Origin: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Ethiopia

Varietal: Mixed Heirloom

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and Yirgacheffe is the very heart of it - high up on a mountainous plateau. Gedeb is a micro-region in Yirgacheffe and it is known for fruity profiles. This coffee has notes of pineapple, mango, wild honey and caramel. In the cooling floral notes of bergamot and lavender come through. The cup is sweet and juicy.

Chelchele Estate was established in 2013 on 30 hectares of land in the very heart of the Yirgacheffe appellation, known for its high-quality coffees. The producer, Metad, also brought to us our Gedeb Beriti microlot this season which is from the same area. He operates a precise traceability system. More than 2,000 farmers that live in and around the village of Halo Beriti deliver their best cherries to the station.

Metad provide regular training courses and they pay coffee farmers advances. They are involved in projects to promote environmentally responsible agricultural practices, and they financed a road construction and a primary school for 800 pupils in the vicinity of the washing station. Metad cover all expenses for the school. It offers scholarships for 105 disadvantaged students in the region of Gedeo.

Gedeb Chelchele

Varietal: Caturra, Pache, Mundo Novo

Bernardo Rojas Colala has been growing coffee for 18 years in the San Ignacio district. The Cajamarca region lies in the north of Peru, nestled away in the high altitudes of the Andes mountain range. Las Orquideas has rich flavours of peach, yellow plum, raisins and cacao nibs. Its high sweetness is supported by notes of maple syrup and orange marmalade. The mouthfeel is silky and the body is held together with good balance and structure.

San Ignacio is home to several Cup of Excellence finalists, and this has inspired Bernardo to focus on producing better coffees. One hectares of his small farm is dedicated to coffee growing, surrounded by extensive forest with great bio diversity. Bernardo is taking part in a government-led initiative to protect pristine forest.
