Gihanga coffees are produced in cooperation with Mbizi and Mugina washing stations. The botanical variety used in its cultivation is Red Bourbon - a variety with excellent taste and a long history in the region. This coffee is characterized by lively fruitiness combined with complex acidity and a long, sweet finish. The very word "Gihanga" means "Creator" or "Founder" and refers to the Rwandan hero described orally as the ancient king and founder of the Kingdom of Rwanda. Legend has it that he was to introduce the African Great Lakes Civilization to fire, farming, metallurgy, hunting, woodworking and pottery. He is also described as being resolute and having many talents. The Hingakawa Women's Association, which is behind this extraordinary coffee, is a unique co-operative managed by women, enabling coffee producers to play a prominent role in the Rwandan coffee industry. They treat their work as a tribute to Gihang, the Rwandan hero.
