Finca La Estrella

Located in La Unión, Nariño, in the southwest of Colombia, Finca Estrella is a family story. The coffee plantation, which has been passed from generation to generation, cultivates 13,000 coffee trees. The proximity of the equator, volcanic soil and a high altitude with warm days and cold nights are perfect conditions for growing outstanding coffee.

Producing a high-quality coffee is very important for Mr Carlos Estrella and his team. To select the best Caturra-cherries, not only do they harvest just the red ones, they also place them in a tank which isolates the most mature ones. Throughout the process, they use exclusively spring water from the farm in order to preserve the aromas of the coffee. After being sun-dried on the patio, the coffee is carefully packed in Grain Pro bags, which preserve its quality for longer.

Fazenda do Sertão is owned by Nazareth Dias Pereira and is managed by her extended family. The farm has approximately 210 hectares planted with a variety of coffee cultivars and an additional 600 hectares with native forest and grazing for Girolando cattle. This coffee was processed using the pulped natural method, during which the cherry skin and fruit is removed and the sticky parchment-covered beans are left to dry naturally. The final stage is the removal of the parchment before the coffee is bagged and shipped to us.

Rodolfo and Reina are the proud owners of the La Pila farm. Rodolfo has basically been in coffee for his whole life. When he was young, he used to work on farms as a coffee picker to earn money. And when he was 25 years old, he inherited a plot of land from his father, so that he could start his own farm business.

Little by little he managed to make steps ahead, increase the volume of his coffee, and invest in another plot of land. He names his farm ‘La Pila’, which is a tank for water in this context, as he found a small water source on his farm. He made a small cement tank and decided to use this as a reference for his farm. Water is very scarce and precious in this region.

Rodolfo is very eager to improve the practices on his farm, to keep learning and innovating. He’d like to have a soil analysis done at his farm, so to optimize the root and foliar systems of his plants with adequate nutrition. He also plans to keep investing in the processing area. He came up with a genius system to depulp the coffee with a bicycle! Since 2017 we are working with him on honey and natural processing and are thrilled by the results.

La Pila

This coffee is a new project of the Inga community in Aponte. Together in collaboration with local experts, growers have built and maintained raised beds, where they carefully monitor the drying process.

The Inga community is comprised of descendants of the ancient, pre-hispanic Incas. During the period of conquest, they remained isolated high in the mountains that became their natural refuge. This community did not resume significant contact with the rest of Colombia until the second half of the nineteenth century.

Unfortunately in the 1990’s, contact was mostly criminal, and the Inga’s refuge became a place of cruelty. For years the tribe was forcibly involved in poppy and heroin production under the influence of guerrilla groups, drug traffickers, and paramilitaries.

The once-peaceful mountains teemed with illegal plantations and violence, in which the Ingas were trapped until as recently as ten years ago. In the last decade the mountains have become a safe zone for the Inga tribe, and illegal crops were eradicated to give way to a new culture: coffee!

The Caturra variety has been planted in the Inga territory at an average of 2150 meters above sea level. This elevation, combined with the Galeras Volcano constantly shedding nutrient-rich ash, makes for an exceptionally complex and sweet coffee.
