Meet the farmer

It is no secret that we love Colombian coffee - it comes as no surprise that we chose another Colombian as our second release.

This time we are presenting you a Caturra microlot from the farm El Placer, produced by Sebastian Ramirez. “El placer” means “pleasure” in English and we promise that once you’ll try his coffee you’ll see, or better say taste, the connection.

El placer farm stands tall at 1.590- 1.740 masl in the town of Calarca, Quindío region, in the heart of the Eje Cafetero also known as the Coffee Triangle, a region famous for growing and producing the majority of Colombian coffee.

The first coffee trees at the farm, more exactly Typica and Bourbon, were planted more than a 130 years ago by Sebastian grandfather; today El Placer is run by Sebastian and his father Ernesto.

The Ramirez family grows Gesha, Pink Bourbon and Yellow and micro lots like Caturra and Castillo, with an aim of producing the highest quality of Colombian coffee.

Besides the more common process techniques that are found at the farm, Sebastian also works with experimental anaerobic fermentation methods that allows him to obtain clean cups of coffee with an intoxicating fruity and floral aroma, with a good body and an amazing sweetness. He is very focused on this processing technique and invests lots of energy into continuously  perfecting it and for that he also choose to work with Q Graders and Q Processing Level 3 professionals that inspect closely the fermentation process.

This particular Caturra microlot is a Washed Carbonic Maceration, Lactobacillus double fermentation that was slow dried for 20 days on patios inside “parabolicos”, which are covered drying rooms, similar to a green house, that helps protect the unstable, wet parchment from the elements and helps with the controlling and monitoring of the temperature and humidity levels.

Along with producing outstanding coffees, Sebastian also works with Bienestar Animal, a foundation in Armenia, Colombia that goes around rescuing animals that have been abandoned or needs medical attention. Most of Sebastian coffee lots are named after the dogs that he adopted and brought back to the farm, so it is not unusual to find Pink Bourbon nanolots called Tigre or Garota.
