Story:  Brazil has worked hard in recent years to promote itself as a sustainable speciality coffee producer. This coffee we have named Saintly after the region it is from Santos founded in 1546 by the Portugese. Coffee from the Port of Santos gave rise to the city and mostly accounted for the wealth of the city at the turn of the 20th century. These days tourism has also added to its economy. 

Brazilian Santos is a light bodied coffee, with low acidity, a pleasing aroma and a mild, smooth flavour. Brazilian Santos Bourbon is dry-processed (dried inside the fruit) which is why some of the sweetness of the fruit carries into the cup.

Second Crack Coffee

Story: Huila is spanned by the Andes mountains and is home to the towering Nevado del Huila volcano. The word Huila comes from the Páez indigenous language and means “Luminous mountain”, because of the beautiful topography of the region. Coffee is delivered to the mill from the central and Eastern Andes mountain range. The mountains provide rich fertile volcanic soil, and the deep valleys and Magdalena river attract tropical air which creates a perfect microclimate for growing coffee. Palermo is a municipality in the northern part of the Huila Department and is home to the mill where this coffee is processed. 

Coffee is picked by the smallholders in the municipality in the same way as across much of the country. Families and neighbours share labour to collect the cherries which are commonly washed and dried on the farm, often at high altitudes on steep slopes, or brought to a nearby beneficiary for processing. It is then brought to the dry mill or cooperative headquarters for cupping, scoring and sorting for export.

Due to the many microclimates, faces of the slopes, and changing weather patterns, there is often fresh coffee cropping throughout the year, though generally this is split across the main and mitaca (or ‘fly’) crops.

Global warming has seen a significant change across Colombia, bringing challenges to some areas and opportunities to others. Earthquakes and landslides have featured in the coffee areas, but the commitment to quality remains high.

Sumatra 'Punchy' Mandheling

We searched high and low for a decaffinated coffee that doesn't taste like one and found this little gem! Plus it is processed using the swiss water method so no chemicals (which a lot of other decaf coffees use)!

In 1885, Atanacio Rodolfo Romero, great-grandfather of the Rodríguez-Romero family, bought some plots of land in the region of Las Capucas, Honduras, and began to grow tobacco and some coffee for the family's consumption. 75 years later, his son Atanacio Rodolfo Romero traveled to Costa Rica, where he learned of best practices to produce high quality coffee, changed from tobacco to coffee, and laid the foundations for the Capucas to become one of the areas most outstanding coffee plantations in Honduras. in 1999 Omar Rodríguez, Yerno de Atanacio, founded the Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas Limitada, COCAFCAL.
