We have often bought microlots from the Karimikui Washing Station because the quality of the coffee has convinced us again and again. In February 2019 we had the opportunity to visit the Rungeto Cooperative and the Karimikui Washing Station as well as to get to know the board of the cooperative and the manager of the Karimikui Factory personally on site. This visit reaffirmed our commitment to maintaining our long-term relationship with these producers.

The Karimikui Coffee Facrory, founded in 1966, is located in the Kirinyaga District at an altitude of 1,600 - 1,800m and, together with the Kii and Kiangoi Factory, belongs to the Rungeto Cooperative. Around 1400 active farmers from the surrounding regions deliver their harvest to the Karimikui Washing Station and have their cherries processed here. Accordingly, the washing station produces a large number of microlots each year. The aim of the Karimikui Factory is to maintain or even improve the quality of the coffee in the long term, which is why seminars and training courses are offered to members on a regular basis. That this pays off can be seen in the popularity of the coffees and the high prices that the cooperative pays its members for their coffees, which each year are among the highest in the country.

The processing is typically wet for Kenya, that is, the cherries are sorted, floated, depulped, fermented overnight, then the mucilage is washed off in water channels and the best glassaminos are soaked again overnight before drying (soaking). Finally, the glassaminos are dried in the sun. The entire factory is terraced in order to make use of gravity during the process.
