In the Popti language, Mumuxa means “continuous rain,” and the cool and wet climate in Concepcion Huista produces outstanding specialty coffee. Alonso inherited this small farm from his father in 2000, which had previously been used to grow traditional foods like corn and beans. He chose to sow coffee on this land in order to earn more income for his family. Working through trial and error to find the best ways to keep his arabica plants healthy, today he uses applications of microorganisms to boost production while maintaining the health of the natural environment.

Alonso is part of the cooperative El Sendero which provides coffee producers support and information around Concepcion Huista in the Huehuetenango region. El Sendero Cooperative was formed in 2016 and it has 196 coffee producing members  of which 62 are women and 134 men. The cooperative focuses on gender equality within producers and supports young farmers in an attempt to continue the strong coffee farming traditions in Huehuetenango.
