Even in Brazil, a country with a long coffee tradition, the history of Fazenda da Lagoa is outstanding. The roots of Fazenda da Lagoa can be traced back to the second part of the 18th century when Portuguese settlers built a little chapel on the bank of the Amparo river and put up fences around an area that is the farm we know today. 

A place of outstanding beauty, and a haven for diverse Flora and numerous animals. To ensure this natural environment is conserved for future generations, all activities on the farm are closely monitored. Sustainable principles guide all cultivation and processing practices on the farm. 

Situated 1,100 meters above sea level near the town of Santo Antônio do Amparo, its 2,850 hectares include a natural reserve, woodlands, pastures, and 1,500 hectares of coffees. Streams from 40 natural springs supply water to the land and gradually converge into two small rivers that mark the borders of the grounds and are the water source for the largest town. 

Amongst the early settlers was a man called Manouel Ferreira Carneiro, a man of simple means, he built the first house on the farm, which prospered to become one of the biggest coffee estates in the region. Today Carneiro’s direct descendant, Joaquim Paiva, is one of the managing directors on the farm. 

Coffee cultivation is so much more than a business at Fazenda da Lagoa it’s a way of life. Only Arabica varieties such as Cstuaí, Mundo Nova,Acayá and catucaí have been selected and are grown in the plantation nursery according to strict sustainable principles. By protecting healthy soils, rivers and producing sustainable coffee, Fazenda da Lagoa aims to be an inspiring partner to its neighbouring communities.

Fazenda da Lagoa honours its 200 year old coffee tradition whilst also being known for its innovative farming approaches, that include modern agricultural techniques that are based on scientific research that’s carried out on the farm and shared with the wider community.
