Colombia is not only rightfully famous as a coffee-producing country, but it has also been at the cutting edge of the specialty coffee movement. A lot of this has centred around Huila (where our partners at the excellent La Chorrera farm are to be found), however the department of Antioquia (further north) has begun to catch up and we have seen more and more great coffees coming from this region. This small lot is a perfect example of that move towards a quality focus in coffee production in the region around Medellin.

This lot comes from the Puerto Arturo farm which is owned by Elkin Arcila. When inheriting the farm from his father, Elkin saw an opportunity in specialty coffee and focused on both the selective picking of ripe cherries and careful management of the washing and drying processes to improve quality. As well as refining existing processes, he’s also experimented and pushed what flavours are possible from the farm by trying new plant stock and processing methods. It’s not just his own farm that Elkin has been improving though; he’s been involved in developing knowledge about specialty coffee in the community and, in 2018, he set up a coffee school for children in the nearby town of Támesis

On the farm he has now planted Bourbon, Castillo, Caturra Chiroso, Typica, Pink Bourbon, Wush Wush, and this lot - Geisha. With only 580 Geisha plants currently in production, this is a very small lot, but on tasting it immediately stood out for us as a classic example of why Geisha has gained a huge reputation in places like Colombia.

The floral notes of Geisha work in perfect harmony with the crisp and clean finish which is so unique to Colombian coffees. On the front end is a mix of sweet but zingy passionfruit and pomegranate. The florals come next and then a delicate raisin makes an appearance before that crisp finish.
