A mildly sweet coffee with a light floral aroma and a slight note of milk chocolate. Depending on the type of preparation, it develops a nice nut-nougat note. The beans are medium to gently roasted.
Coffee from the Bolivian highlands has become a fixture. In the mild climate, at altitudes of up to 1700 m, the best aromatic highland coffee grows alongside fruit and citrus fruits.

The medium grind is suitable for all types of preparation.

The coffee comes from small Bolivian farmers of the cooperative Union ProAgro and Bio Arabica.

Organic coffee from the Andes
The Union PROAGRO (UNIÓN DE PRODUCTORES AGROPECUARIOS) is an association of Aymaras and Quechuas from the Andes of Bolivia. You grow Arabica coffee from an ecological point of view without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Growing coffee creates prospects
The members of the smallholder community PROAGRO live in the Bolivian province of Caranavi, on the edge of a drug growing area in Nor Yungas. The Union has around 210 coffee farmers, including around 46 women. The situation of the farmers and their families, who once immigrated from the highlands, is often marked by extreme poverty. The coffee project shows them the possibilities of legal cultivation.

Advice for coffee farmers
The cooperative advises the smallholders and gives them technical support on production issues and ensures that the organic coffee is marketed together. The coffee plantations are located in three different climate zones at an altitude of 800 to 1,600 meters.

From the cherry to the export
When processing the coffee, the purchase of expensive technical equipment was dispensed with: The small farmers process their coffee on the fincas in a traditional and ecological way. The coffee cherries are freed from their fleshy skin in simply constructed, hand-operated peeling machines. The drying then takes place on raised wire mesh. The green coffee is then brought by truck to El Alto near La Paz, where it is prepared for export in the organization's own facility.

Organic Arabica
Young coffee farmers set up a cooperative
Bio Arabica is a young Bolivian cooperative in a double sense: on the one hand, because the 35 members have an average age of 33 years, which is very unusual in coffee growing, and on the other hand, because the cooperative was only founded in 2013. 35% of coffee farmers are women.

Quality coffee on 4.5 hectares
The coffee grows in the regions of Calama, Nogalani and in the province of Caranavi at an altitude of 1350 to 1700 meters. Every coffee farmer owns his own piece of land of around 4.5 hectares on which he grows coffee. The main harvest is June and July: Coffee cherries of the varieties Catuai, Mondo Novo, Caturra and Criollos are picked by hand. The farmers selected the varieties based on their disease resistance and excellent coffee quality. In addition to coffee, they also grow fruit and vegetables for their own use. They sell citrus fruits, bananas or corn on the local market.

Democratic organization of the cooperative
Members meet twice a year for meetings. The board of directors of the cooperative, which is always elected for three years, is invited. The use of the fair trade premium is also decided jointly.

Organic farming: a contribution to environmental protection
The producing families receive technical support, training in the production, processing and marketing of coffee. Through organic cultivation, Bio Arabica contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and protects the environment. Profits are reinvested in coffee growing.
