Proudly titled after its incredible producer, we are beyond excited to present a special offering from the La Gemelas farm in the Huehuetenango department of Guatemala. Thirty years ago, Flora Ramos and her husband began their coffee-growing journey together. Tragically widowed only ten years in, she perseveres in this livelihood alone. Despite facing the challenge of supporting two daughters in a region considered over 90% impoverished, Flora overcomes every obstacle with dignity and determination. As if carving out a presence as a woman producer in a vastly male-dominated industry weren’t difficult enough, she makes continuous operational improvements to exceed coffee quality expectations every harvest. With developments to her wet mill and a soil composition analysis in the works, this trendline shows no sign of faltering. Refusing to settle in survival mode, Flora seeks the flourishing of local ecosystems and remains committed to lessening the negative effects of coffee farming on the environment. As such, this high-scoring coffee grows under the bird-friendly shade of local vegetation and subsistence crops. Once the cherries reach prime ripeness, they are carefully picked, hand-sorted, milled and fermented using the washed process, and packaged for export. PrimaVera, a vertically-integrated local exporter/importer, engages the adversity facing Hueuhetanango’s growing segment of female coffee producers head on. With vested interest as a woman-owned business itself, PrimaVera offers microloans, technical assistance, and competitive pricing, giving Flora a platform to share her craft with the world. Together weathering the storm as a tight-knit community, Flora and PrimaVera’s stories are characterized by thriving in the face of difficulty.
