The first coffee plantations in this region were founded during the Dutch colonial era around 1850, but they are now in Indonesian ownership and provide a great source of income for the country.Today, North Sumatra is criss-crossed by family-run cultivation areas, which cultivate an average of 1-2 hectares of land. The mountainous landscape is home to many volcanoes, which bring a very fertile soil with them. In addition to the tropical climate, this creates ideal conditions for cultivating the Indonesian Arabica plants. In addition to the coffee plants, various shady fruit trees such as avocado, bananas and jackfruit also thrive on the mountain slopes. Its earthy aroma with a fine, fruity note is typical. Only the composted shell of the coffee cherries is used to fertilize the earth. We source the raw Arabica beans from the Kopsen Petani Kopi Gayo cooperative, which specializes in sustainable coffee growing. This has 341 member farms, who have joined it and can thus market their organic coffees efficiently. All coffees from this cooperative are selected and certified. The quality is checked and it is ensured that no unauthorized chemicals have been used. In addition to the EU organic seal, our Indonesian beans also have the UTZ certification. After the still raw beans have arrived at the cooperative, they are packed in jute sacks and sent to us in Germany.

Our Mexican Arabica beans come from the Sierra Madre Chiapas Mountains. The area is traversed by streams of fresh water that run through the cultivated areas - at over 1,100 meters above sea level. The plantations fit harmoniously into the great biological diversity of the region.Due to their tradition and history, the indigenous coffee farmers in the Chiapas Mountains are not unfamiliar with organic farming, and coffee has been grown according to strict ecological criteria from the 20th century until today. Just like all earlybird coffees, the coffee cherries are harvested fully ripe by hand on the farms, the beans are removed from the shell, processed, sorted, sun-dried and then transported to the cooperative's collection point. earlybird coffee gets its raw Mexican beans from the cooperative Uniòn de Cafeticultores del Norte de Chiapas SC (UCANOCH). The cooperative is an association of small farmers who, through this association, have the opportunity to manage and market their high-quality coffee themselves at fair prices. UCANOCH attaches great importance to a corresponding green coffee quality and is in direct contact with the selected coffee farmers. All farms have successfully passed the organic certification process. The cooperative itself is UTZ-certified and not only buys the green coffee from the farmers. She also supports the farms in the event of bottlenecks and advises them on more efficient and thus more sustainable production processes.

Limu coffee comes from the western highlands of Ethiopia and is one of the best and most popular coffees in the world. The coffee plants grow there on a total area of ​​approx. 450,000 hectares. No wonder that the vast majority of people there make a living from growing coffee. The name "coffee" probably comes from "kaffa", because the coffee plant has its origin in Ethiopia.The first wild arabica plants grew in this region - until today. Our Limu coffee also contains beans from wild coffee cherries from the high mountains. With a sense of more sustainability, Limu plants naturally also grow on plantations with high biological standards. Protected by many shade and fruit trees, it develops its familiar floral note. The harvest is still done by hand to this day. Every single bean in your coffee that was once stuck in a dark red coffee cherry was picked by hand from the bush. Like almost all coffees in Ethiopia, our Limu green coffee comes from selected smallholders. After being sorted, washed and sun-dried, the raw beans are taken to the ECX coffee exchange (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange). Around 90% of the coffee production in all Ethiopian growing areas is bought here. The ECX was founded in 2008 with the aim of better organizing coffee exports and ensuring better quality. The farmers receive direct payment for their harvest and access to the global coffee market.
