Located near Tingkem in the Regency of Bener Meriah, the farmer group compromises of 400 farmers spread over 450 hecatres who grow their coffee in the rich and fertile volcanic loam soils which are comprised of a mixture of sand, silt and clay.

This soil type combined with the climate allow for the perfect growing conditions of coffee giving the rich and full bodied, spicy and smoky coffees associated with the region. The Mandheling coffee represent all Arabica coffee in this area and the name derives from the Mandailing people who produce coffee in the Tapanuli region.

The members of the group receive training on tree management looking at the application of pesticides, pruning and picking ripe cherries to assure the best quality possible. Within this farmers also receive training on conservation of the natural environment looking at measures to prevent soil degradation, erosion and improving soil health. They are also educated on waste management as well as ensuring safe working conditions for themselves. Once picked the coffee undergoes a 12-hour fermentation process before then being dried for 1-2 days to around 35-40% moisture.

Once the coffee has reached this moisture it is then sent for hulling and then further dried to down to around 15-18%.From here the coffee is then transported to Medan where it is finally dried down to 13% moisture content before It is then packed in grain pro lined bags ready for shipping.

The owner of Bwenda, Bernard Uwitije, is a native of southern Rwanda, in the district of Nyamagabe. Coming from a region where coffee was a dominant crop, he first entered the sector trading ordinary home processed coffee. He later learned of the added value if one processed fully. Wanting to set up a proper and sustainable business in the coffee sector, he built his first wet mill near his hometown in 2016. He used the first year to learn all the details of operating a wet mill successfully, and he built a second washing station the following season, where he then mastered processing large volumes without compromising quality. Bwenda was his third washing station, which he built in 2018 after realizing a group of farmers, who were a bit isolated, did not have a closer washing station to process their cherries into high quality coffee. 2019 was the first season of operating Bwenda, processing only 1 container worth of cherries. Bernard is already developing various programs to help farmers delivering to Bwenda with extension services, as well as expanding the capacity of the wet mill.

With an excellent SCA score of 87, this natural speciality coffee is available as an espresso roast (for our filter roast of the same bean click here), and has raspberry, tropical fruits like mango, and dark chocolate that make a very complex cup. This roast works well as an espresso or milk based drink, as well as a Moka pot or Aeropress.

Rwanda Bwenda

The Central American country of Guatemala has been producing coffee for over 150 years. Our Coatitlan coffee beans come from a cooperative called the Cooperativa Agrícola Integral Atitlán.

Atitlán is both the name of a lake and a volcano, situated in the Sololá department of Guatemala. The lake itself is endorheic, meaning it does not drain into the ocean or sea, and is overlooked by three volcanoes, Atitlán (with a peak of 3535 metres above sea level) and Tolimán (3158 masl) to the south and San Pedro (3020 masl) to the west, the slopes of which provide the vast majority of this coffee. Headquarters for the cooperative are in Santiago Atitlán, on the banks of the lake. Although the full range of the cooperative covers altitudes of 1350-2000 masl, the majority is grown around 1700 masl.

With an excellent SCA score of 85, this washed speciality coffee is a medium-light roast, and has blackberry, boiled sweets and raspberry flavours that make a juicy, syrupy cup. We recommend this coffee as a filter style coffee e.g. V60, Chemex.

Running Beans - Woking

Spring is here and we've launched our latest limited edition seasonal blend! When deciding a name for the blend we landed on the Spanish and Italian words for Spring, Primavera, which literally translate to "First Spring", with the "ver" being the root of many European words that came to mean green, with that first sight of green buds sprouting from the trees probably being the inspiration. 

For our speciality coffee blend we wanted something that celebrated our Spanish speaking origin countries; both our Colombian Excelso and Peruvian have a smooth chocolatey mouthfeel that comes through beautifully as an espresso. The Peru has some lovely Apricot, Peachy and Currant notes, whilst the Colombian packs the real coffee wallop, to make what we think is a perfect, well-rounded coffee for a variety of brew methods. 

Primavera - Spring Coffee Blend

We have limited supply of this high SCA scoring coffee from the Mujeres De Hichozal (Women of Hichozal), celebrating a number of incredible female coffee producers in Honduras in support of Women's History Month.

The Mujeres de Hichozal blend is a mix of lots from a number of female producers who are part of the Aruco group in Honduras. The blend was made to highlight the role of women in the coffee supply chain with the goal of producing a high quality coffee at scale, which allows roasters around the world to buy more coffee from these growers. The blend was made from a mix of coffee from 6 female producers.

Cherry was delivered to the Aruco wet mill, where it was macerated overnight and pulped and dry fermented for slightly longer than usual. This slightly extended fermentation gives the coffee great sweetness and a fruity, red berry character. 

Honduras - Mujeres De Hichozal

The Clubhouse Coffee is a very special coffee blend that we created in partnership with a local charity, The Clubhouse Project. Simon’s daughter and Matt’s sister, Chrissie, was born with Downs Syndrome, and The Clubhouse Project has been a place where she has grown, developed new skills and had a fantastic time hanging out with her friends.  

50p of every bag sold will be donated to The Clubhouse Project, which directly goes towards providing services and activities for the young adults.

The Coffee
The blend is a combination of Ethiopian and Brazilian Peaberry beans, which creates a really versatile, sweet tasting coffee that tastes amazing in a variety of brewing methods (particularly using our Aeropress recipe!). Expect notes of milk chocolate and marshmallow.

The Clubhouse Coffee Blend

We have limited supply of this high SCA scoring coffee from a small lot in the Sagara region of Southern Ethiopia. It is our highest scoring coffee with an SCA score of 88.5.

The coffee owes its name to the Sagara washing station owned by Daye Bensa Coffee Export, who owns farms and washing stations around Southern Ethiopia. The washing station purchases coffee from farms in the surrounding area, typically small holdings of between 0.5 and 3 hectares. This particular coffee, Sagara Lot 3, was selected due to its unique qualities that made it stand out on the cupping table, earning it a very reputable 88.5 SCA score.

Expect cupping notes of lemon verbena, jasmine and hops. This small lot coffee that can easily be brewed in a variety of methods, and works just as well as a filter coffee as it does for espresso.

Our House Espresso blend has been tried, tested and perfected to make the perfect espresso coffee. Using a blend of three different coffees from Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica, we've managed to combine their unique flavours to make a fantastic blend that you can use in your bean-to-cup coffee machine at home to make café quality coffee.

This combination of darker roasted beans has a deep chocolate flavour, with a hint of caramel at the finish; perfect if you enjoy your coffee as a flat-white, latte or cappuccino.

The South American country of Colombia has very strong roots in the coffee industry, as it was once the world’s largest producer of washed coffee beans. Annually, Colombia exports approximately 12.5 million bags and consumes 2 million bags internally. Coffee beans are produced in three main geographical areas, trisected by the Andes mountain range.            

Excelso Colombian coffee beans are large with a screen size of 15-16, second only to the Supremo bean with a screen size of 17. Colombian coffee is graded before shipment according to bean size, and Excelso beans accounts for the greatest volume of coffee exported from Colombia.   

Our speciality Colombian coffee beans are medium-dark roasted, producing a strong coffee with notes of sweet citrus and lemon. It’s a versatile coffee that can easily be brewed in a variety of methods, including a French Press, V60, AeroPress and Moka Pot.

The South American country of Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and has held that title for over 150 years. They are responsible for around a third of the total worldwide coffee production.       

This coffee hails from a well-known hill in the area called Morro Agudo (meaning simply ‘Steep Hill’). Keeping things simple and descriptive, the family decided to give the same name to their coffee farm. 

Our Brazilian Morro Agudo speciality arabica coffee beans are a medium dark roast with chocolate and almond cupping notes.

Coffee has been produced in Costa Rica since the 18th Century, and has been a key export in the last 150 years. 

One of Costa Rica’s most well-known regions, Tarrazú produces coffees with a refined and very high acidity, the result of favourable soil and altitude and good processing.

Ethiopia is the largest African producer of coffee beans, and is considered by many to be the birthplace of coffee over 1,000 years ago. The coffee plant “coffea arabica” originates from Ethiopia, and today accounts for over 60% of coffee production worldwide.

The coffees in Ethiopia are all named after the geographic location where they grow. Sidamo coffee beans grow in the south-west of Ethiopia at high altitudes of between 1600m and 1900m.  

Our Ethiopia Sidamo has an excellent SCA score of 82.5, and cupping notes of apricot, caramel, and malt. This amazing coffee that can easily be brewed in a variety of methods, but we think it’s best suited to an Espresso or Moka Pot.

Coffee is an important commodity in Papua New Guinea, making a significant contribution to the country’s export revenue earnings, as well as supporting over 2 million people who derive all or part of their livelihood from coffee beans. More than 90% of Papua New Guinea’s coffee is grown on smallholder farms or small village "coffee gardens".   

The Eastern Highlands is a mountainous province encompassing the Kratke and Bismarck ranges interspersed with broad valleys including where this coffee is grown, the Okapa valley. It is the leading producer of coffee in the country, and now comprises around 3000 small holder producers, across 32 village communities and spread over 500 km2. Income from coffee has been spent on providing fresh water for 11 of these communities, as well as helping with infrastructure such as roads which makes a huge difference given the isolation of the villages.

Our Papua New Guinea speciality arabica coffee beans are a medium roast with sweet and fruity cupping notes. It’s a delicate coffee that we think best suits a French Press, filter, V60, or Aeropress.

Kenya is a country of great diversity, lying towards the East African coast and centrally located on the Equator, which splits the country into two almost equal parts. Kenya’s rich endowment of volcanic soils, high altitude, rainfall, and temperatures enables the country to produce high quality coffee beans that are rated as among the best in the world.

Acacias is a selection of the best coffee beans from across what used to be called the Central Province of Kenya. They are hand-picked when ripe, and come from a co-operative of 6 different small farms in the region. 

Our Kenyan coffee beans have been lightly roasted to bring out their cupping notes of lime, butterscotch, and blackcurrant. This fruity coffee we think best suits a French Press, filter, V60, or Aeropress.

Kenya AA Acacias

The Central American country of Guatemala has been producing coffee for over 150 years. Our La Nueva Era coffee beans come from a cooperative in the Fraijanes region of Guatemala.

The Fraijanes Plateau type coffees have a higher potassium level in the soil, which tends to bring extra body to these coffees. Fraijanes is it’s own distinct region and actually one of the first areas to grow coffee in Guatemala. Volcan Jumaytepeque forms part of the chain of volcanoes in the area, though is not really active, and the village where the coffee is grown lies in the foothills of the volcano.

With an excellent SCA score of 86, this natural process speciality coffee is a light roast, and has dark berry flavours and makes a creamy, rounded coffee.

Guatemala La Nueva Era

The South American country of Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and has held that title for over 150 years. They are responsible for around a third of the total worldwide coffee production.                  

Our Peaberry coffee beans come from a farm in the Cabo Verde district of Minas Gerais. Established in the 1920s, the farm has passed down to the founders’ grandson who now owns and runs it. It supports 36 families and provides seasonal work to over 150 people.  

Peaberries are estimated to make up to around 5–10% of a coffee bean harvest. They occur as a result of a natural mutation, or defect, inside a coffee cherry, where one of the two ovules fails to pollinate. This results in extra space for the single developing seed. Within this space, a larger and rounder seed grows inside. This is a peaberry.

We’ve lightly roasted this delicate Brazilian coffee, and it has sweet, nutty overtones and notes of chocolate and marshmallow. Packed full of interesting flavour, this versatile coffee can easily be brewed in a variety of methods, including a French Press, V60, AeroPress and Moka Pot.

Our Vietnamese coffee beans are from the heart of Asia's coffee producing region, one that has been a major source of income for the country since Vietnam began to cultivate and grow coffee beans in the early part of the 20th century.

Combined with our Colombian Excelso coffee beans, which have citron and lemon notes, this blended coffee roast is a dark roast, and it's got a caffeine kick which is perfect for a good morning cup of coffee to help you get moving! This coffee blend has rich dark chocolate and nutty notes.

Morning Coffee Blend

The South American country of Colombia has strong roots in the coffee industry, as it was once the world’s largest producer of washed coffee beans. Coffee beans are produced in three main geographical areas, trisected by the Andes mountain range.      

This is the decaffeinated version of our speciality Colombian coffee beans, which are decaffeinated by the renowned Swiss Water® Process. Swiss Water® is the innovative craft of using pure water to gently remove caffeine. The 100% chemical free process decaffeinates coffee in small batches.

Excelso Colombian Decaf coffee beans are large with a screen size of 15-16, second only to the Supremo bean with a screen size of 17. Colombian coffee is graded before shipment according to bean size, and Excelso beans accounts for the greatest volume of coffee exported from Colombia.

BOLIVIA - KUSILLO - SPECIALITY COFFEE BEANS - LIMITED EDITION
We have limited supply of this high SCA scoring coffee from the Bolivia, who only produced 30 bags total of this incredible high scoring SCA coffee. 

Kusillo is located in the colony of Bolinda, which lies in a lush, steep mountain valley around 10 kilometres outside of the town of Caranavi. The colony of Bolinda was founded 52 years ago and was once known as ‘Bolivia Linda’ or ‘Beautiful Bolivia’. Over the years this name was shortened to Bolinda, and it is now one of the larger settlements in the area.

Bolivia has an interesting coffee history and although it was exporting close to 85,000 bags in the early 2000, Bolivian coffees almost disappeared at the end of the last decade. In 2018, only 23,300 bags were exported. A tiny portion of these were sold as Specialty grade. The reasons for this are multiple but the main one was the coffee rust that hit the coffee regions very hard and decimated many farms.

Finca Kusillo (Kusillo translates to monkey and is a reference to a character from Bolivian folklore) is owned by the Rodriguez family who started their business in 1986. At that time, the family used to rent wet mills in Caranavi region, buying cherries from 2,000 producers. In 2001 they built their current wet mill, called Buena Vista, in Caranavi. Very quickly a dry mill in la Paz was built and the family started exporting operations. In 2012, a few years after the national drop of production, they decided to buy land and start farming as well. They now have 8 farms in Caranavi region (60 ha) and 5 farms in Samaipata region (60 ha). In 2019, the won the SCA Sustainability award in the category ‘Best Sustainable Business Model’. 

We have medium roasted this delectable coffee to try to bring out it's unique characteristics; subtle floral notes with some amazing fruity and juicy Pomegranate and Apple flavours that should leave no bitterness in the mouth. We think this coffee is suitable for a variety of brew methods, but we've really enjoyed this as an espresso and creates a delicious base for a milky drink.
