Finca Wipoj developed from a farm that Pedro inherited from his father in 1989 to become the main source of income for his family. He is positive about the future of specialty coffee and wants to innovate with younger generations whilst passing his knowledge on. Pedro works on many aspects of his farm from the handling of plagues and diseases without using herbicides, to having good shade and root fertilization systems.

So you know when your friend who worked as a barista in a specialty coffee shop a few years back told you that blends were rubbish? Well they lied and what they really meant was, it it's their guilty pleasure.

You see, blends can be really, really good. The beauty is the consistency of a set profile and for this we've found one packed full of Chocolate & Caramel with big body and sweetness. The coffees that make up this profile - 'the blend' - will change and bring with them different nuance, but they'll still present these qualities that we love.

Our current blend comprises our Aerobic Fermented Brazil 'Jaragua' and Washed Costa Rican 'Hermosa' and we're so chuffed with how it's turned out. This iteration has lots of sweet orange acidity and with milk reminds us of Toffee Ice Cream.

This is José's first crop as a coffee producer. Coming from a family with a strong agricultural background, himself and three of his seven brothers harvested their first crop this year. 

This is a real exciting adventure for José, and it's hard to believe that this is his first harvest from the quality observed on the cupping table. We are super excited to be supporting the brothers on their journey and we hope you are too.

Andres Godolfredo Cano is a second generation coffee grower who dreamed of producing coffee from a young age. In order to buy his farm he worked for years, from 6 AM to 6 PM each day, carefully saving money to invest in land, so you can be sure that the crop harvested is a product of pure passion and care. Coffee farming is his passion and he feels a sense of pride when investing in healthy and productive coffee plants. He puts so much effort into producing coffee in a sustainable way in order to conserve the area’s resources. His excitement and commitment to his crop really shines though in the crop he produces and we couldn't be happier to be working with Andres' beans!

Pedro has been a coffee producer for 30 years, and has been working hard to produce a good quality of crop, rather than focusing on producing a higher quantity as many producers had previously been focused on. 

Las Peñas is the name Pedro landed on for his farm, due to the very large limestone
rocks that form part of his plot, literally translating to 'The Rocks'.

Once the ripest cherries on Pedro’s farm are picked, they are immediately transported to the depulper. After the flesh of the coffee cherries has been removed, the coffee goes into the fermentation tank to be dry fermented for 32 hours. This process is more sustainable as it saves the use of water. It then rests in a tank of clean water for 12 hours.
The coffee is then evenly dried in the direct sun for 6 hours per day, for a period of 6 days. Pedro makes sure that the coffee dries evenly by only having it dry in the sun from 9 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon. 

Pedro's dedication to producing a high quality green bean really shines through and makes for a high quality cup!

Las Penas

Alto Robalito is a part of the farmer collective Cedro Alto who offer a large array of benefits to small scale farmers, crucially ensuring far and stable compensation. This coffee has been twice fermented after washing; once anaerobically whilst in cherry followed by an aerobic dry fermentation which gives it a sweet, fruit forward profile.

This is the third coffee we've released from Fazenda Cetec this year so far, and this one is a real crowd pleaser. Cetec is a truly inspiring farm and progressive fermentations are a part of their nature. This naturally process microlot was a finalist in the Minasul quality competition and presents us with lots of sweet, vibrant flavours alongside a it's prominent fermented funk thanks to its processing.

Edilma grew up on a coffee farm and purchased Finca El Carrizo with her husband. When her husband fell ill in 2020, it was her connection to working on her farm that helped her grieve.

Of her 6 sons, 3 live with her on the farm, one of whom helps to operate the farm. Edilma also employs 2 full time workers who have been with her since 2014 to help her with everything from pruning and fertilising to harvesting. The profit she receives from selling high quality lots like this one helps to maintain these employees. Since they understand her standards, she feels retaining them is a good investment in the future of her farm and coffee quality.

Pink Bourbon is a very rare hybrid varietal of Yellow and Red Bourbon. The hybrid, almost exclusively grown in Colombia, most often presents a good quality cup score, good productivity and easy adaptability meaning it can be pretty resilient with its climate and is good against leaf rust diseases.

El Carrizo

La Argentina is a part of the farmer collective Cedro Alto who offer a large array of benefits to small scale farmers. This coffee has encountered a rather complex fermentation; first a 35-hour anaerobic in cherry, followed by a 36-hour semi anaerobic fermentation in sealed tanks.

Kigutha Estate coffee is a high grown top quality coffee from the slopes of the famous Aberdare mountain range, close to Kiambu town, north of Nairobi. The annual production of the farm produces roughly 60% AA and 35% AB each year, with a small amount of under grade sold separately, and is certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

Blue grass is grown in between the lines of coffee to reduce water loss and soil erosion, with rainwater collected from the processing unit and sent to the nearby run off collection dam, home to government protected hippopotamus. A number of differing trees are grown in the nursery to form shade cover which helped the farm gain RFA status back in 2009. Shade grown coffee is uncommon in Kenya and the bird life benefits greatly from a differing height of tree cover as well as other wildlife like Hippopotamuses which are protected by the government in this area.

In the true Kenyan style, cherry is picked, washed and fermented before undergoing a soaking -an additional 24 hours under clean water that allows amino acids to build, and is attributed to giving the clarity of flavour and syrupy body we have come to know and love. The beans are then sun dried on raised beds until ready for dry milling and exporting.

It's no secret we are big fans of syrupy Kenyan coffees, and this hits the nail on the head!

Kigutha AA

After inheriting some land from his late father alongside some encouragement from his brother, Jorge Adan Monge Garbanzo (‘Don’) started the coffee farm Las Palomas. Sadly passing himself this year, his son and daughter have taken over the production on the farm and we are so fortunate to present this Black Honey lot from their first harvest.

The farm itself has produced some wonderful lots in recent years from its Caturra and  Catuai plants, both Red and Yellow.  The first coffee was harvested without knowledge of its production qualities. However, later in 2007, the family decided to associate with an organisation of agricultural producers called ASOPROAAA, which intended to make known the quality of the coffee being produced in the local area. Under this research, ASOPROAAA announced that in the Acosta and Aserrí regions, coffee was being planted and produced to the highest quality standards. This granted producers of this region both with high prices and quality awards, unique to the world.

The Monge family have remained for more than four generations in coffee. We’re so glad to be able to represent this coffee in the next step for the Las Palomas farm.
